Grupo Social Once, Mercadona and Inditex are the three most responsible companies in Spain under ESG criteria

Merco announces the 100 most responsible companies in terms of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) in Spain in 2021. After more than ten editions analyzing the Responsibility and Corporate Governance of companies, Merco has made a leap in this indicator towards a more holistic measurement of business sustainability, which has resulted in the new Merco Responsibility ESG.
In 2021, Grupo Social Once (1st), Mercadona (2nd) and Inditex (3rd) are the three most responsible companies in Spain under ESG criteria. Completing the top ten are Ikea (4th), Mapfre (5th), Mutua Madrileña (6th), Mahou San Miguel (7th), Nestlé (8th), Telefónica (9th) and Caixabank (10th).
On the other hand, a subranking has been carried out for each variable (ESG). Thus, among the most environmentally responsible companies, Grupo Social ONCE (1st), Inditex (2nd), Mercadona (3rd), Ikea (4th), Iberdrola (5th), Mahou San Miguel (5th), Mapfre (6th), Telefónica (8th), Sanitas (9th) and Ecoalf (10th). The most responsible in the social, internal and customer spheres are, in order, Grupo Social ONCE (1st), Inditex (2nd), Mercadona (3rd), Ikea (4th), Mapfre (5th), Mutua Madrileña (6th), Nestlé ( 7th), Danone (8th), Telefónica (9th) and Mahou San Miguel (10th). Finally, those that have stood out in their responsibility at an ethical and governance level are Grupo Social ONCE (1st), Inditex (2nd), Mercadona (3rd), Ikea (4th), Mapfre (5th), Mutua Madrileña (6th), Caixabank (7th), Repsol (8th), Telefónica (9th) and Nestlé (10th).
The reputation management tool was born after an exhaustive and detailed analysis of more than 43,680 surveys, in which 24 sources of information and 7 perspectives have been taken as reference. Specifically, Merco Responsibility ESG Spain 2021 has had the participation of 1,110 managers, 92 CSR experts, 93 financial analysts, 96 economic information journalists, 50 members of the Government, 110 NGO managers, 95 trade union managers, 80 associations of consumers, 76 Social Media Managers, 609 managers of SMEs, 2,667 citizens, as well as the latest edition of Merco Talento (38,526 people in the sample) and Merco Digital (in collaboration with Nethodology). In addition, objective criteria of reputational merits have been verified by 76 companies. These results have been verified by a third party, KPMG, in accordance with the ISAE 300 standard.
